What is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE)?

A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is a life change that allows you to change your insurance coverage mid plan year.

You’ll be able to make changes to your benefits elections outside the annual open enrollment period for up to 30 days following the date of the QLE.

The main QLEs are:

Loss or gain in health coverage

If you or your eligible dependent(s):

  • Lose existing health coverage

  • Lose eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

  • Turn 26 and lose coverage through a parent’s plan

  • Gain coverage

Note:

  • If you or your dependent(s) lose government-provided coverage, you'll have up to 60 calendar days following the date you lose coverage to make changes to your benefits elections.

  • For all other QLEs, you have 30 calendar days to make changes following the date you lose coverage.

Changes in household

 If you:

  • Get married or divorced

  • Have a baby or adopt a child

  • Experience the death of a dependent

Changes in residence

 If you are:

  • Moving to a different ZIP code or country if the new ZIP code doesn't have in-network coverage under your current benefits plan (for example, if you have an HMO plan).

  • A student moving to or from the place you attend school

  • A seasonal worker moving to or from the place you live and work

  • Moving to or from a shelter or other transitional housing
